“me neva shame me is a coolie bai”
The Lyrics of Romeo “Mystic” Nermal’s Coolie Bai Dance resonate with a large part of the Guyanese population, we love it, dance to in, embrace it wholeheartedly, “finally is the coolie bai chance”, we are for the large part very comfortable with our selves and identity, the term coolie has lost almost all of its derogatory power… except when used deliberately in a political context, then something else happens, we don’t retaliate by dropping into that gutter to fight, we stand taller and prouder , stick the badge on the shirt and vow to never let anyone get the chance to subjugate any Guyanese again!
A bit of personal history is in order here, I am a Georgetown Coolie Bai, not a member of any political party nor a supporter of any, I do want a better Guyana for all Guyanese, that is my agenda, the friends and family are of all ethnicities, One Love is a way of life.
Guyanese are frustrated with the Government, the allegations of corruption and mismanagement are loud have grown to a crescendo, and a subtle movement to rewrite our history has permeated social media, where younger people get the majority of information and form perceptions from older heads.
So when a political party calling itself “A Partnership for National Unity” was born, I like other Guyanese looked forward to seeing an agenda , manifesto, plans , anything that would benefit Guyanese. As of yet the plan seems to be in the uterus and the manifesto seems to be regain power then plan.
The program for the rally in protest of the prorogation of the 10th Parliament was an eye opener, no hint of unity, prayers by one Elder Heywood, no Pandit or Imam, drumming by the Buxton Fusion, and poems, not one nod to the heritage or entertainment of the majority race in Guyana, but yuh talking "unity" , APNU has revealed its true identity, the People Never Cared in a green shirt. I did not attend, not inclined to support those who would wish to marginalize me, instead I went to a R.U.M meeting and when mih song came on ….. ah propah Screw some bulb like a coolie bai....
